Positive
1. determined
2. intelligent
3. charismatic
Negative
1. stubborn
2. oblivious
3. defiant
These traits influence Chris in a positive way because they are the only reason why he survived so long during his tramp life. He was described as a likable person, eager to work and help out. Not only did his charisma give people a chance to attach to him, but he was intelligent and was an interesting guy from what I have learned so far. Regardless, e was riding on luck, and the kindness of others entire time he was wandering.
As result, he's negative traits are the reason for his demise. There are countless examples where his own stubbornness caused serious issues for him, number one being his lack of provisions for the great venture into the Alaskan wilderness. Secondly, we know that if Chris had accepted Franz as a makeshift parent, grandparent, or any type of nuclear relationship that it would have meant the world to Franz, yet the fact that McCandless was so oblivious really exemplifies how selfish of a person he really was.
Finally, the most important characteristic I believe Chris possesses is his naturally defiant nature. The perfect example is Chris's experience at McDonald's. Immediately after his shift he would rip the socks off his feet. In addition, Chris' complete journey is a result of his defiant nature. He renounced his family and deliberately ignored them all for his own benefit. All in all, Chris' defiant and selfish characteristcs are the reason for his odyssey and demise.
I agree with what you said about his positive triats. I don't think he would've made it as far as he did on his journey if he hadn't had those.
